I am sorry if I made some erroneous assumptions.When communicating on a forum such as this assumptions must be made and some will be wrong.Please feel free to correct me again should this happen in the future . Now to the meat of your post much of which I disagree.I would very much like to see any such admission by McCarthy.I am not doubting your word perhaps the interpretation.Print of course does not guarantee truth.You say Genes' actions were driven by political expediency in that his home state did not support the war.I do not Remember [unfortunately I did inhale]that well but I am pretty sure that he was very secure in his position as Us senator who had been easily reelected.Also I do know that Wayne Morse also a Senator with much seniority was defeated after clashing with the incumbent of his own party.It must also be noted that after the fray McCarthy did not run for Senator in his home state.I also disagree that he could have smelled public opinion moving his way .He was the one who moved public opinion.Untill Clean Gene came on the scene It was only "dirty Hippies"[of which I was one] or "Commie sympathizers" that opposed the war effort.Believe me I remember debating this issue with my friends in the local hangout I was always out numbered by 10 to 1.And the opposition was always very impassioned to say the least.Flame throwers that would dim some on SI to insignificance. If I were king I would do a lot of house cleaning as well but it's to late and I am too tired to go into that right now.BTW I am an extremist on the environment.Subject for another time.I also enjoy this civil give and take. pez pez
