Mike, That is exactly what happened to my assistant. When I gave up management of the fund (I hung around long enough to hire another backup portfolio manager to my assistant and to say I told you so and to spend a year as a consultant for the firm). He did exactly what they demanded and got canned for being a Good German. I don't really think they would have fired me in the same circumstances. I had a lot of credit with shareholders and directors for the good returns I had earned them. But my feeling was that if I ever wanted another job, I couldn't afford the lousy performance that falls on the nominal manager even if somebody else is pulling the strings. Plus, I had a lot of money and I'm kind of an A-hole in my stubborness. And, I had promised people that I would not screw them if they bought the fund. They got screwed, but I wasn't the Clinton at the time. <G> In retrospect, I wish I'd just put on some bearish positions that my bosses didn't understand, but that sounds good in retrospect. It didn't feel like an alternative at the time.
