Pete: I agree with you in principle. Indeed, Russia's rife corruption
and economic chaos make the rise of the strongman, such as General
Lebed, almost inevitable, if not desirable, at this juncture as my original
post was designed to imply. My second post, however, acknowledged
uncertainty that such a power shift might evoke from the markets.

After all, a theorized Lebed coup d'etat might be construed as tan-
tamount to a de facto military take-over of Russia. The memories
of the long and bitter Cold War are not long gone. Neither are gone
Russian generals and powerful communists dedicated to the de-
struction of the United States, one way or the other. In the long
run, the mere possibility, however remote or near, of the rise of
a militarized Russia from the ashes of history can not but strike
chords of uncertainty in forward looking markets.
