Brazil shares down 10.13 pct shortly
before close

SAO PAULO, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Brazilian stocks went into a
virtual freefall late Thursday as Russia's economic problems continued to haunt investors.

The Bovespa index (^BVSP - news) was down 10.13 percent shortly before the close, falling to
6603 points at 1651 local/1951 GMT.The decline exceeded the 10 percent threshold that would
trip a circuit breaker suspending trade earlier in a session. But no halt was called because there was
less than a half-hour to go before the close.

The market's top bluechip, Telebras preferred (TELB4.SA), was down 10.74 percent at 84.70
reais, while Eletrobras (ELET6.SA) tumbled 18.18 percent to 18 reais.
