Computer Learning sees Q2 EPS below expectations

FAIRFAX, Va., Aug 27 (Reuters) - Computer Learning Centers Inc. (CLCX - news) said on Thursday it expects to report earnings per share in its fiscal second quarter well below Wall Street estimates of $0.16 per share.

In the second quarter ended on July 31, 1998, Computer Learning, a provider of computer-related education, expects to report earnings of about $0.04 to $0.05 per diluted share, compared to $0.12 per diluted share, a year ago.

The company, however, sees revenues increasing by 59 percent in the second quarter to about $35.2 million from $22.1 million, a year ago.

Results for the second quarter of fiscal 1999 include certain after-tax losses of about $829,000, or $0.05 per diluted share.

These losses include about $470,000, net of tax, in operating losses associated with three new Learning Centers, as well as an after-tax loss of about $359,000 from the company's Advantec Institute.

In addition, the company sees second quarter operating expenses of about $1.0 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, including about $303,000 related to the settlement with the Illinois Attorney General, $514,000 in legal expenses associated with the settlement and $202,000 in lease termination costs.

Student enrollments during the second quarter increased 13 percent to 3,438 from 3,037, a year ago. Enrollments at the 16 Learning Centers that have been open for more than one year, however, fell by 16 percent during the second quarter to 2,539 from 3,037, a year ago.

As of July 31, Computer Learning's cash on hand decreased to about $8 million because the company had to fund the education of students at some of its new centers without federal aid. The company expects to rebuild its cash reserves upon the receipt of federal funding for those centers.

Computer Learning provides information and computer-related education and training at 26 Learning Centers in the U.S. and Canada.
