CVD market promising in China 08/28/98 Xinhua news agency - ceis (copyright 1998) Beijing (ceis) -- while the vcd market remains sluggish resulted from the price cuttings by various shops, a newly-developed audio-video product -- cvd (china video disc player) -- has emerged on the chinese market, arousing great interest among chinese customers. Cvd was first jointly developed and put on the market by several chinese big-name vcd producers such as idall, sast and amoisonic in june of this year. A survey conducted by the shanghai wen hui bao daily shows that the sales of idall cvd stand at 30-70 sets a day in the shanghai no. 1 department store, more than 50 percent of the total sales of various video disc players. Among the consumers surveyed, 27.9 percent say that they are going to buy cvd within one year, and some 20.6 percent of vcd player users express their intention to buy cvd in one year. Such potential big market of cvd has made various producers optimistic. General manager of idall company expressed his confidence in the market, saying that the total demand for cvd is expected to reach seven million sets this year. Experts have attributed the popularity of cvd to the following factors: -- excellent performance. The definition of cvd has reached 350 lines, much higher than 250-280 lines of dvd . It has four independent audio recording channels, and can have subtitles in eight languages and the man-machine interactive control. At the same time, its compatibility with vcd has satisfied the needs of different customers. -- competitive prices. The price of cvd is only slightly higher than that of vcd. Some 86.2 percent of the constomers surveyed say that 200 yuan higher than the price of vcd is nothing for them as long as cvd is good in definition. -- bigger space for function extension. As cvd adopted mpeg-2 technology, it boasts many similar industrial standards easily linking with the network tv and satellite systems in the future. However, the experts noted that the promising market prospects of cvd have urged various manufacturers to pay more attention to definition quality, because it is of great interest to the customers. The experts also suggested that as vcd sets in many chinese families have not yet reached the time for upgrading, vcd producing factories can start the business of trade-in sale in a bid to stimulate the sales of cvd.
