Don't worry about "fears of global deflation", we already have the real thing. That's what a commodity index now equal to 1977's is telling us. The analyst who is talking of the possibility of 190 gold identified July 20, '98 as a major turning point for the stock market. He says he identified the date four years ago in his cycle work, and I can vouch for the fact that he was at least talking of that particular date as of last January. Anyway, this guy began as a metals analyst back in the late '70s, so I'd give his opinion on gold some weight. I think he mentioned 230 as possible support, with 190 being the worst case low.
