Computer Networking Brief: The selling in this group was just plain ugly... Only stock to escape with a gain was FORE Systems (FORE +9/16), as stock rebounded slightly after getting pasted Tuesday in reaction to news that it was acquiring Berkeley Networks in a deal expected to be dilutive in year one... Rest of sector looked like the teen victims in a Freddy Kruger film... Ascend (ASND) down 2 15/16; Bay (BAY) off 3 5/16; 3Com (COMS) down 2 1/4 and Xylan (XYLN) off 3 7/16... Not even Cisco (CSCO -4 1/2) escaped unharmed... Business prospects in this group remain positive long-term, but increased competition and fears of an economic slowdown sent investors seeking refuge on the sidelines.
