Sounds to me like a case of Margin Calls. That can sure cut you off at the knees, which hurts even more when it interrupts a play you have going , before the "big news" has been announced.

Nasty, nasty investment weather looms ahead, Tim.

Russia is just the wisps of stratus clouds flying ahead of the tumultuous Supercell.

The only way to alter this weather pattern is for the Federal Reserve to reduce interest rates and weaken the strength of the US dollar. (Canada raised its interest rates a full percentage point to counter this money market outflow from its currency to the US dollar. Pretty stupid thing to do when their economy is already contracting, but indicates their level of desperation).
