Yes, it is a wordy, run-on sentence, but it's somehow more expressive, I think. It's conversation. And your more efficient version leaves out part of the meaning, I think-- the "I think I know why" part that reveals a certain uncertainty on my part. Or should I say "feigns" it, for politesse! (one). (two) . (three) . (four)

I had such a horrible day yesterday that this exchange was its high point! How sad is that? Thanks, all.

BTW, I'm going away for a couple of days, but when I come back, I'm going to introduce the subject of the barbarization of everyday usage, as in, "The problem is, is that...." and the disconcerting assault on certain consonants, particularly "n," as in "turmpike."
