CHINA ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY PROFITS SEEN RISING 14% IN '98

BEIJING, Aug 27 Asia Pulse - China's electronics industry is predicted to yield 48 billion yuan in total industrial output this year, showing a 20% year-on-year rise, according to the Economic Reform and Operation Department of the electronics industry ministry.

Sales income will reach 310 billion yuan, up 14.1 percent; increase in industrial output, 74 billion yuan, up 13.8%; pre-tax profits: 26 billion yuan, up 14%, and export volume, US$30 billion, up 11.5%.

According to the forecast made by the Economic Reform and Operation Department, the production of program-controlled exchanges will be 26 million lines, up 25%; personal computers (PC), 2.6 million sets, up 50%; color TV, 25 million sets, up 10%; and VCD players, 16 million sets, up 30%.

The electronics industry had generated 224.8 billion yuan in total industrial output in the first half of this year, up 26.2% from the year-earlier period.

Its sales income in the six months accumulated to 131.47 billion yuan, up 14.4% from the same 1997 period; increase in industrial output, 28.52 billion yuan, up 4.9%; and pre-tax profits, 10.18 billion yuan, up 8.1%. Export volume in the January-May period stood at 9.49 billion U.S. dollars, up 2%. The production of program-controlled exchanges in the January-June period was 16.21 million lines, up 82.8%, sales 14.69 million lines, up 95.4%.

Of the total production, 77.6% came from some backbone enterprises such as Shanghai Bell, Shenzhen Huawei, Beijing BISC, Great Dragen Telecom and HiSense.

PCs: production, 1.17 million sets, up 106%; sales, 1.01 million sets, up 122%. Legend Group, Chinas largest PC maker, produced 235,000 PCs in the January-May period, up 39.8%; Tontru Group, 153,000 sets, up 299%; Langchao, 56,000 sets, up 53%; Founder, 71,000 sets, up 103%; Great Wall, 123,000 sets, up 24.5%.

The top five PC makers contributed to 70% of the production and 79% of the sales reported by the electronics industry in the first five months of this year.

Color TV: production, 13.86 million sets, up 23.6 percent; sales, 11.74 million sets, up 20.2%.
