Muslims March To U.S. Embassy In Malaysia To Protest Attacks
Dow Jones Newswires

KUALA LUMPUR (AP)--Hundreds of Muslims in black robes and prayer garments rallied outside the U.S. Embassy Friday to protest U.S. missile strikes against Sudan and Afghanistan.

Clambering atop concrete ramparts fortifying the U.S. compound, they shouted "Allahu Akbar," the Muslim rally cry meaning, "God is Great," and "America, Terrorist!" in English.

About 600 people marched to the embassy after completing their afternoon prayers at a nearby mosque.

"We ask God for fortitude to strengthen us against the enemies of Islam," shouted the rally's organizer, Abu Baker Chik Ustaz, through a megaphone as a dozens of women beside him held up handwritten signs.

"The Americans must be crushed," cried out Abu Bakar, who heads the Pan Malaysian Islamic party's youth wing, as he waved his fist at the fortified U.S. embassy. "From today, they've no right to be in Malaysia."

"Down with America! You people are spineless cowards killing innocent lives," read one sign in Malay.

Muslims worldwide have strongly condemned U.S. President Bill Clinton's orders to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles at suspected terrorist targets in Sudan and Afghanistan.

Both countries said civilians were killed and dozens were injured in the attacks.
