Nokia recovering in Helsinki by almost 4 bucks compared to this morning. It's still 1929 redux in emerging markets... but maybe European Union and USA will pull through. I know some Norwegians and Swedish who are now bitterly regretting their rejection of European Monetary Union. Wolfpacks are circling their currencies, while Finnish currency remains tied to EMU and this level of disaster won't dislodge it.

Chicken soup for venal, greedy investor souls:

- This should knock Siemens and Motorola for a loop. The semiconductor biz is going down the toilet. If the consumers get scared and scale down spending, the less competitive handset manufacturers will take the brunt of suffering. Siemens, Philips/Lucent and Alcatel have already faced blunt criticism for pouring money into loss-making mobile phone divisions... axes may fall in any restructurings.

- Welcome, Iridium! The shell-shocked businessmen around the world are waiting for 3'000 dollar phones. Meanwhile, Nokia is beefing up its low-cost model line-up.

- Ericsson is exposed to South America - Nokia not. Let's see whether the devaluation salsa heats up in Mercosur countries.

- Market was indiscriminate in driving down all tech stocks... but it may be highly discriminating in picking the candidates for the rebound. Any profit warnings or signs of weak earnings in October could be toxic indeed. Nokia's 3Q edge over M and E should be reflected in their stock prices soon.
