KAA,
I read a very interesting book about 20 years ago called "Anatomy of Revolution" by Crane Brittain. It analyzed the American, French and Russian revolutions and the English Civil War to try and make generalizations on what sparked social upheaval. The most common characteristic was when people who have had their expectations raised and then frustrated. Based on this the Russians who have seen their living standards jump and are now seeing them snatched away are prime candidates for 'revolutionary' change. FWIW I also have extensive dealings with Russia and Russians (currency and bond trading).
My fear right now is that Russia is headed towards fascism. The real power in Russia is the 'oligarchs'. These gentleman sparked the recent crisis to defend their over leveraged banks. They also are behind the recent change in government. I fear the situation will continue to deteriorate and these gentleman will opt for alternative solutions. We are already hearing talk of renationalizing industries and return to certain soviet style remedies. Someone like Lebed will make an excellent figure head for these people.
Fwiw I do not think Russia will be responsible for WWIII.
Henry

Good points. But, Russia still has some of the old guard and if the situation becomes worse then all hell could break loose. I still think as it gets worse it is RIPE for a new Hitler.

Agree on Pakistan/India-- but, IMHO, N. Korea is overblown and China is severing ties with it's red-headed stepchild as China heads towards more capitalism.
