The country had it's worst depression up to that point from 1873-1879 and we had INFLATION after the Civil War not deflation

Paul, The deflationary period after the post Civil War inflation was accompanied by tremendous productivity gains and economic expansion . The huge productivty gains enabled prices to fall. The current deflation is due to excess debt and capacity. Mike
