Many money managers were sitting tight and viewing the market for sport. "If you own solid companies and know what you own you should be indifferent," said Bill Schaff, of Bay Isle Financial in San Francisco. "Tech stocks had an overreaction on the upside so there will be an overreaction on the downside."

Schaff said investors should sit tight before making rash decisions.

"If you sell, you can look like a moron because the market could go up," he said. "If you buy, the market could go down. There's not much indication of where the market is heading."

The Trigger

The tech descent came as there was little news directly affecting the sector.</b. U.S. markets in general fell after Russia said it would no longer support its currency by buying rubles, then halted dollar trading of the currency. The Russia news triggered a sell-off in Europe, while the Asian markets sank further as the Japanese Parliament continues to argue over reform measures.
