AMD's business model is very high-risk and depends on a very strong market for processors with no hiccups. I remember reading an article talking about how AMD's investments in the Dresden fab could spell trouble if the ride gets bumpy. Intel, on the other hand, can postpose construction jobs, close down fabs temporarily, and ride through the storm on a very soft cushion of capital and margins. Furthermore, all the employees at Intel are currently rallied around the cost-cutting, belt-tightening attitude that Barrett is calling for. It will be interesting to see how Intel and its competitors can ride out this storm. And judging from the price of INTC today, DANG! This is going to be quite a storm.
