Also for your information the KNI API will be support by MS DirectX 7.0 to be released JULY 1999! The economy of scale of a fab is 1 FAB! It costs twice as much to run 2 FABs, and thrice for 3 FABs. The only thing you really save is the R&D. Time to the market is everything. AMD was able to get support from all vendors such as MS, SGI, TDFX, Matrox, SIS, IBM, game makers, etc. a year before the chip was rolled out. That is no trivial task but it was easy for AMD at that time since there was no other technology viable. MMX2 is very late to the market and it won't come cheap when it is released. By then already 12M+ users demanding 3DNow! KNI will just be another failed attempt by Intel just like Intel tried to penetrate the market with the first Celeron. KNI is not compatible with 3DNow since it uses a different opcodes. Had Intel been smart they would have made KNI backward compatible with 3DNow! Intel is just too proud and to save face they got to have it their way. The KNI will lose. Current ISVs are still not quite up to speed writing 3DNow codes. That is why Unreal and Incoming perform so poorly. QuakeII/QuakeIII and Trespasser will be the first games that optimally coded for 3DNow! By Christmas there will be plenty of games for 3DNow. Maxwell
