Encoders get cheaper.............................

Future Trends
Continuing improvements in circuit integration from C-Cube and IBM will result in increased speed for both hardware and software enoders. Also, as more consumer products support the variety of DTV formats, lower-cost encoders that work beyond MP@ML will become available.
Expect to see standards develop for the exchange of metadata documenting critical production decisions. This "audit trail" will improve compression efficiency as video streams will know what specific compression criteria to use for a given scene, instead of forcing the encoder to analyze the segment first.

CHYRON TO DIVEST CONCERTO, SELLS TRILOGY
melville, ny--As part of a company restructuring, Chyron announced in its second quarter earnings report for 1998 that it has sold its Trilogy Intercom division in a management buyout and is looking for a buyer for its Concerto software package.

"The rollout of digital television has proceeded at a slower pace than expected, resulting in an industry-wide lag in digital equipment sales," Chyron's President and CEO, Edward Grebow said in the report. "However we continue to invest significant sums in product development, confident that the pace of digital conversion will accelerate. At the same time we are curtailing investment in products outside our core areas of expertise.

"Chyron has refocused on its core business of graphics, routing and automation products for television broadcast, cable and post production," added Grebow.

The Trilogy buyout consisted of $3,800,000 in cash and notes, plus a 19 percent interest in the new company resulting from the sale. Chyron expects to receive $2.9 million for the Concerto, its Windows NT-based desktop compositing software.

As part of the streamlining process, Chyron also cancelled an option to purchase 51 percent of virtual studio systems designer RT-SET, recalling 533,000 shares of common stock that had been issued to the Israeli-based company.
