Robin, do you have any evidence to support the view that the Communist experiment in Cuba would have succeeded without the boycott, or is this just your feeling?

OT*******.."And they've got no one to blame but the great american society for boycotting them and forcing their trading partners to do the same."

Dead WRONG...They have no one to blame but Fidel Castro and all his supporters...If money was allowed to get into Cuba, their citizens wouldn't see one penny of it...That's what communism is all about, it would all go to the government and it's supporters. If you need proof, look at Castro's money, he was in the top 20 list of richest men on earth, why is his countrymen so poor? COMMUNISM! Communism is a means by which all men are treated EQUAL, in other words they will guarantee that a Dr will be as wealthy as bum.

Robin: In an American context one has to define one's terms. The phrase "communist" can be applied to someone with long hair.

Even though Europe has incremently adopted free market economics, it still retains much familiarity with the economics of state intervention and state control. This goes under the guise of liberalism, socialism and communism. Even the conservative parties support such "socialist" programmmes as health and social welfare. There are elected communists in the legislative chambers of France and Italy, for example.

It would be extraordinary if Russia could move without disruptions from a form of 19th century feudalism, then state owned economics to cowboy capitalism, even if that were desirable. If reform was to be incremental and gradual in its movement towards a free market economy it would have better chance of success. That is why Gorbachov was right and Yeltsin wrong.

Much of the instability in Russia has been caused by the effects of free market economics in other regions of the world - which has depressed commodity prices and de-stabilized banking. Much of Russia's inability to raise fiscal revenues through taxation is caused by Russian robber barons, who have completely adopted the capitalist ethic and techniques to grossly enrichen themselves and who wield enormous unaccountable influence behind the scenes in order to protect themselves and their corporations from the Russian tax collector.

It would be helpful if America supported a made in Russia solution while at the same time supplying cash and credit through the IMF, but only if Russia offers convincing evdience that its reforms are well-reasoned and effective and only if the money is kept out of the hands of the robbers.
