I'm mystified by this dialogue, Clinton did tell us why he lied....(actually, the word he used was "misled")...he said it was to save him and his family from the embarassment the truth would cause.

He had no noble ulterior motives, he just wanted to save his own butt, regardless of what it cost those he had to smear, or those who actually were foolish enough to believe him. He didn't have the brains to figure out that others smarter than he would find the truth.
