Guys, you keep mixing IBM of post mid-seventies with IBM of the period before. Before it was a fastest growing US Co, not big in size, though big in market cap. It wrestled the computer business from the likes of GE, which was much larger Company at the time. Thomas J. Watson, Jr., son of the Sr., who founded the Co., the Jn. took it into computer business. Both were CEOs and Chairs. Anyway, he wrote a nice book (ith help, of course) about history of IBM since start to about 1980.

But believe me, there are new mistakes to be made. Everyone has their 2 years (or 30 years if you are really good) under the limelight.

IMHO IBM still has one of the deepest roots in computer industry.
