My biggest worry is this idea of increasing returns writ large. In other words, the old paradigm was that emerging markets suck in absolute wealth, but are real cool in terms of growth. Now, we're starting to realize that growth was illusory, backed solely by increased inputs (read: debt). In my bestest (and scantest) terms: The problem lies in the lack of real opportunity for the middle and poor classes to develop. The "growth" is sucked by: 1. the few who control the great wealth there is, and 2. the corruption that exists. If you read my post re: the politico-biology of Mexico, you will see where the debt load ends up. The government as evil as it is, it becomes a mere tool of the guys in power, they own it, and use it at will, the debt load becomes somebody else's hindering further 'growth'.What kind of jealousy and ill-will do you think we'll stir up if the world suddenly realizes that we're not only the richest nation in the history of the world, but also the fastest growing? (not to mention the freeest and bestest... My county tis of thee...) Suddenly realizes you say ??? No, no, they have known it all along, except there is not much they can do about it, (read above). Besides, the general public although are jealous of keeping their traditions, they are not stupid, they also want the nice things that only the American system of enterprise is capable to provide. With all due respect, and knowingly sinning of 'generalizations' I will say: Luckily for the US, Latinos are gentler beings, indeed the land of Ma¤ana... as frustrating as it is, they are not zealots, as in other parts of the world. ( I will refrain to name places). But even so, that is coming to an end, indeed the continuos growth in the population and continued economic rape placed on the population, is causing to large segments of the population to say enough is enough. The solution, in my opinion, rests in truly opening opportunity to middle classes and the poor, how ? 1. the start has to be education. 2. no welfare please, I personally do not believe in it, in fact I hate it, and it would not work anyway. 3. in the particular case of Mexico, do away with the idiotic immigration laws, instead, allow for a guest worker program, many benefits would come, including tax collection of the money paid (otherwise lost). 4. If government and private enterprise require the US help, then they must accept some kind of supervision, otherwise it is money lost. In the end the solution has to be from within. Yes I acknowledge the risk of envy... that is the reason terrorism exists, not much it can be done there... but fight it, with weapons and with education. There is more.... but in the name of brevity.... there it is.
