That stat is also quoted as 80% expire worthless. What it misses and distorts is all the options that are closed out prior to expiration. I've got a pile of AMZN puts that are now so deep in the money, I really need to roll out of them and will, come next week. I'm not going to hold these winners until expiration; what am I going to do? Buy stock on the open market and then sell it as my option contract gives me the right? Too much friction in the trading, and too much capital tied up. And my options will not be counted as winners at expiry although my brokerage account will sure be fatter. -g-
