I believe it is the smart thing for tax purposes. It gets the stock out of his estate and when they receive the stock it establishes the kids cost bases for tax purposes. The kids can hold the stock for a lifetime and sell at a captial gains or pass the stock on to their children. I'm sure someone in estate planning could cover this better as some comments may not be quite accurate.

imo if you have more money than you plan to spend you should start asap planning on how to disperse it.... John
