Loved this entire post; someone who sees shades of gray, and all the complications that abound, but realizes it is mostly noise? A miracle.

Thanks.

As I read what u have to say I have more and more respect for your opinions, though I don't agree with some of them. Don't agree on NKE for example. My guess would be that Warren has made a US Airways type mistake, but for different reasons. Sneakers still drive the NKE bus and basketball without mike is not the same thing, and in anycase trendsetters are moving on. Sure nike has market power, but in the wrong market. I would expect NKE's brand premium to start melting away, and as it is a in essence a product made expensive by its marketing costs, not because of the value in it, nike will get creamed in any reccession. In fact in the Nike sneaker you have found a classic example of the problems of the modern market. To make them affordable, given the high costs of marketing them, which are largely because of the endorsment $$$$ paid to Athletes making extraordinary profits, they have to be made by cheap labor ---- the very cheapest labor one can find. Problem is that these workers arn't paid enough to buy the smeakers so by our gluttony we again shrink the market for the product.... so I guess I'm saying that nike's a short.... Go out into the inner city courts that built the brand, and see what kids are wearing.... sure there's nikes, but what's really cool is anything but.
