Sonki, Compaq, my as usual not very flattering opinion of them, FWIW: Compaq delays Alpha stations
The company has put off the
release of its first
Alpha-processor-based
workstations until the fourth
quarter or later to clear up
problems.

IMO CPQ bit off more than they can chew with their purchase of DEC just a year after buying Tandem. Both of these companies are legitimate high tech and do a lot of R&D and original design. CPQ puts boxes together. How can they lend overall top management, leadership, and set strategy for companies that are in another league from theirs? This would be like GE buying Intel. I don't see their big competitor Dell going out and buying any high tech companies. They stay with what they do well. Of course, they are doing it better than anyone and are growing as fast as anyone would want to.

The article says Compaq is having trouble with performance aspects of the Alpha based server designs. Maybe they get better spec's from Intel for building Xeon based servers than they get from their own DEC about Alpha?

I know some of the faithful here own CPQ. Don't mind me, they'll probably go up. I just don't like their style, especially when they do things like flood the market with PC's like last year and cause the huge inventory problem.
