APACHE's approach to outcomes management:

Step 1 - Compare outcomes to standards
Step 2 - Develop guidelines
Step 3 - Apply guidelines concurrently to individual patients

"Managing resource utilization is the primary source of incremental savings for the foreseeable future."

AMSI's data management allows healthcare providers to see clinical and financial results so they can make cost/benefit decisions about the usefulness of particular therapies.

The idea is to effectively treat patients with high risk and maintain treatment quality.

Savings achieved help the hospital's and the physician's competitive profiles. This can lead to additional contracts and revenues.

AMSI's APACHE systems provide data to match patients' health status with the financial costs.

Physicians are the primary decision-makers in resource use. "Since the largest utilization savings are most often realized from critical care patients, developing an outcomes strategy to guide practice pattern changes in these areas should be the highest priority."

"APACHE data have been invaluable to us in highlighting opportunities for improving clinical effectiveness." - Thomas J. Trudell, President and CEO of Marymount Hospital.

Critical patient care savings of 33% are possible, 66% for potential inpatient savings, according to AMSI.

I don't understand all of what I've read (yet!), but basically, hospitals - and doctors - are in a very competitive marketplace. Winning managed care contracts are vital and require measurement of information to develop cost management models. APACHE data can assist in identifying hospitals and doctors with good clinical (patient results) and financial outcomes.

This would tell me why they have so many clients.

Of note, APACHE introduced the use of predictive information for individual patients. This is important, as such outcomes (predictions) had usually been available for the trend analysis of groups.
