Paperchase, There is no doubt that options should be used as insurance, and not as a pure play "bet" on a stock or on the market.

I guess they just complicate my life, and they cost money, and they add to short term taxes when I am trying to generate long term (20-30 year) capital gains. Also, I am not allowed to buy options in my retirement account, though I think I could write covered calls.

4 ways to decrease the emotions:

1) Recognize your emotions, and deal with them separately from your investments.

2) Diversify, so when a stock tanks, you can remember it was <10% of your portfolio.

3) Keep investing and taking pain so you get used to it. ;-(

4) Keep your day job. :-))
