Christine,

Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentinian writer, died around 10 years ago at a very advanced age. He wrote what have been called 8-page novels, dense, gnarly stories dealing with all manner of offbeat, sometimes downright fantastic ideas, blending the fruits of a hardcore European classical education, extensive reading (he was for years director of the National Library of Argentina), and a strong overtone of the wild blood of the gaucho. Most of his writing came well before the Latin "magic realism" entered the public eye, though he is surely one of the major influences on that movement (few of whose practitioners, IMO, live up to the master).

Some of the stories are almost unreadable at first, until you get used to the style, but once you find an entry point you'll find yourself hooked for life. Or you'll throw it away - some do.

I love his stuff - I can read the stories a hundred times, and still find new things. Look for a book called "Ficciones", and browse.
