djane,

3Com and Siemens have a strategic relationship already. I believe they are developing additional functionality into the Palm III platform for voice and data integrated in one device. I think the two companies are better to continue their strategic relationship and build on it vs. having Siemens outright acquire 3Com.

>> COMS and Siemens --a long rumored combination especially if LU/ASND get together in early to mid-10/98?<<

COMS and Siemens are intertwined pretty well as it is. It
would be good, though, to do a thorough investigation of how
much is at stake in their relationship, and what would be the
loss if they separated.

Couple reasons why they wouldn't merge:

1) Coms probably wants more $$ than Siemens wants to pay.

2) Too much work to re-organize from a merger, and at
the same time COMS is rebuilding/transitioning to new
products and also solidifying its merger
with USRX.

3) Alliances can work well without all the extra baggage
of merging.

Of course, who knows a year from now.

Industry Leaders Advance IP Telephony Standard
09:15 a.m. Sep 02, 1998 Eastern

3Com, Cisco, GRIC, iPass, and TransNexus agree to support the Open
Settlement Protocol

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1998-- Industry leaders 3Com
Corporation, Cisco, GRIC Communications, iPass, and TransNexus have
teamed up to promote inter-domain authentication, authorization and
accounting standards for IP telephony through the Open Settlement
Protocol (OSP).

OSP allows a clearinghouse to provide call routing and authorization
between carriers. In addition, OSP provides usage reporting through
call detail records. Without OSP, there is no open standard solution
to perform these functions.

In addition to the overwhelming support of these industry leaders,
OSP has been defined within the European Telecommunications Standards
Institute's (ETSI) project TIPHON, chartered to establish global
standards for Internet telephony. "The industry realizes that
ubiquitous interconnection will drive market demand, adoption and
growth of IP telephony products and services, and OSP is a critical
step in realizing the full potential of IP telephony," says Stephen
Thomas, ETSI's editor for this standard and chair of the Voice over
IP Forum.
