Gnosticism WAS around before Christ's time. So? Jesus was a Jew! Both statements are equally logical, or illogical as the case may be. There are literally thousands of links on the net about Gnostic Christians. There were also Gnostic Muslims and Gnostic pagans. I really don't know where you are getting your information, but mainstream scholars certainly would agree with me. Do you think Christianity all came in a neat little package? There were bitter fights over what was and was not Christian, and many believers were slaughtered over the differences. I am finding it very difficult to even understand your position here.
