Paunch, The desert dirts have good 'legs' as they say because of a famous maxim from the mind on none other that P.T Barnum.
As I understand the quote is: "There is a new sucker born on every second of every day"
What he refers to is a emergence of new suckers from the ranks of the retired people, office workers, housewives and so on who are totally untutored against scams and frauds. people who trust their fellow man and follow a story even though they lack the skill to find the flaws in it. Ever see the 3 card montey players in New York?, I bet they could skin you alive. Same for all the classical card sharks in poker etc they are so skilled thaat the common man gets cheatd and even when shown is still too slow to see the cheat !!

Same with desert dirts, transmutation, microfine gold, etc People like thall and the others he mentions can see these scams in an instant from cursory evidence. Placer platinum is nuggets of platinum weathered froma host rock and then carried by water wind to where it is now sitting on the surface for IPM to find. The host rock?, all gone, it weathered away just last week so you cannot find it anymore.

In the final act in 3 card montey when you have him caught, he grabs his table and runs away.
