True, Intel is the proverbial 500 pound gorilla here and will do pretty much what it wants to do. the others?, AMD soldiers on with capable work. With less they would be dead by now. Cyrix would be dead by now but for a rescue by NSM. IBM is strong enough to endure.
What will happen in the furture? the race between the SLOT 1 and a socket based system seems to have been lost by the slot at least up to 500 Mhz. Above that the slot will win and AMD will have it's alpha slot and intel its slot series. Alphas have solved many high speed problems and so I feel that the AMD slot will do well up to as high a speed as the intel slot 1. Whether or not the mixed mode(RISC/CISC/different widths) bus transmission protocol will end up faster remains to be seen. Possibly advantage will be slight, perhaps not?. I have seen no data on that.
Will people keep making boards for both? I think yes as AMD will be forced to make their alpha slot freely useanble by all others(except intel) to gain adherents.
