My gut take on this is "hot air". Even at high end meteoroid densities, the setellite cross section is so low that if three are knocked out we're operating at the "unlikely" high side of the probability curve. I think this is like the Y2K hysteria of a year ago. Sure, there is a problem. But it is diferent than the apocalyptic prophets of doom describe. And it will be cleaned up the old-fashioned way - by hand.
So - imho we will have a dazzling display of meteors, and a better-than-even chance that no satellites will be taken out. At all.

Of course, just watch me be wrong. But one thing I guarantee - we won't have say half our satellites blaste out.

Well, Mike, that was interesting!! Your post about meteor showers took me into that Loral post, which reminds me that it has plunged down to about $15.00 a share now. Aren't we supposed to buy low and sell high? Do you follow Loral? Does anyone here? I finally sold mine awhile ago, but still like the company. Will it survive the Chinese military secrets scandal? Opinions?

Regarding the meteor showers, I would say that is one of the less worrisome problems we face at the moment. It seems like a lot of countries are about to lob missiles at each other! Very scary!
