Hey guys, it looks like we've hooked Tim to the world of technology.

Basic review:
LX boards - old technology - can't run faster chips
Abit BX 6 - is the forerunner of the BH6
Abit BH6 - is a second generation BX motherboard. Its the improved
bx6. This is the one you want. If you were to build your own,
this motherboard only costs $100.

Appian does not support AGP, yet. So you would not use the
agp slot if you went the Appian route.

The other motherboard that has been considered here is the
Asus P2B - only 4 pci slots.

>> ASUS P2l97 has 1 AGP slot.<<

Sloppy posting on my part. I relied on my memory. The ASUS site agrees with you and so do I. However I would stick with the BX boards . In addition to SW's comments I believe Dave mentioned awhile back that the BX chipset is more RAM friendly...

This could be fun !

Could is the key word. It can go either way. If you end up having to return faulty components or having configuration problems the fun disappears. So far I prefer my homebuilt machine to my big box maker machines.

If I go with the Appian card I would not need the AGP slot right ?

Right but try and find a BX board that gives you the extra PCI slot in lieu of the AGP slot. I would prefer six PCI in lieu of five PCI and an AGP slot. The $ I spent on the PCI Matrox MII seems wasted if I consider the upgrade path.

Is there another MB that would be similar to the ABIT BH6 that I could look for at the computer show ?

I have not kept up with the latest mobo's. ABIT was one of the first to come out with the second generation BX boards. I expect (hope) the other board manufactures will follow with five PCI slot boards.

After seeing the prices someone ( forget who, that memory again) paid at a computer show I plan on giving it a look myself.

ps

SW, the home improvements are coming along well. They sure do eat into my time. I used to spend three to five hours per day sitting in this chair. It is down to less than an hour. The project is a little bigger than I expected..scraping cottage cheese off the ceiling, building out the fireplace and adding a marble front..filling the grooves on that sixties style paneling..building a cherry book case / wall around the fireplace..remove rug and replace with ceramic tile....
