maybe I'm missing something here but how is giving 100% to charity better than giving 20% to uncle sam? Take me through this. I have 2000 shares, I give away 1000 to charity and sell the other 1000 with no tax impact - netting 50% of the value of the 2000 shares. I think I'll take the cap gains...

Actually, you get to deduct the market value of the appreciated stock as a charitable gift, subject to limits, against your other income (not capital gains). Low
basis property is really wonderful to have and better to give!

Oh, by the way, here is a recent Nikkei quote -- looking better though
