PAX TV Picks DiviCom for New Network; MediaView Encoders Save Network Millions in Transponder Fees
Business Wire - August 31, 1998 08:27
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1998--DiviCom Inc. (NASDAQ:CUBE), a leading provider of compression systems for digital television, today announced that Paxson Communications has chosen MediaView encoders for PAX TV, its new national broadcast network.

PAX TV makes its national debut today at 12:00 noon with a 24-hour free broadcast network offering a family oriented lineup of shows. One of the first customers for the MediaView MV20 in 1996, Paxson has used DiviCom encoders to save millions of dollars in yearly satellite transponder fees while distributing high quality MPEG-2 programming to its network of stations.

Paxson Communications owns and operates the nation's largest group of television stations and is combining these stations to become the nation's newest and 7th broadcast network. PAX TV reaches well over half of all U.S. TV homes, and that number is growing.

Using MediaView compression systems, Paxson is able to combine eight channels of programming into one satellite transponder for distribution. In an analog transmission, satellite transponder costs typically reach over $100,000 per month per channel. DiviCom encoding saves Paxson almost three-quarters of a million dollars each month.

Why MediaView Encoders?

"The DiviCom encoders have been solid as a rock," said Bill Meyer, director of Network Operations and Engineering for PAX TV. "We've been using MediaView for almost two years and they just keep saving us money. DiviCom makes a great product."

How Does It Work?

Some programs and advertising spots are pre-recorded onto HP MediaStream Broadcast Servers, then sent in MPEG-2 4:2:2 studio profile to the MediaView encoders. Live programs are sent directly to the MediaView encoders.

Once the signals are compressed, all programming is then multiplexed into a single digital stream and transmitted to the transponder. Each stream of programming is matched to a specific time zone. To receive the signals, each network station is equipped with third-party decoders. Local stations decode the streams and play directly to air. The local system converts it back to analog for reception by the consumer's television set.

In the cases where PAX TV is being distributed to a cable system or EchoStar's DISH Network(TM) digital DBS system, the appropriate channel of programming is sent in its digital format. Using MediaView encoders allows Paxson to simultaneously support the digital and analog transmission systems of its network stations and carriage partners.

To further prepare the PAX TV network for future digital television standards, the configuration is designed with open system architecture solutions. This flexible configuration allows Paxson to upgrade as needed.

"The PAX TV configuration demonstrates how MediaView encoders can be used to minimize costs," said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom. "We congratulate Paxson Communications on the successful launch of PAX TV."
