HOUSTON, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Offshore drilling contractor Global
Marine Inc. (GLM - news) said on Friday it had set a new world
record for deepwater oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

It said it had begun drilling a well in 7,718 feet of water on behalf of Chevron USA (CHV - news), Shell Deepwater Development (RD.AS)(quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: SHEL.L), EEX Corp (EEX - news) and Enterprise Oil (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: ETP.L).

This beats the previous record of 7,612 feet set by Transocean Offshore Inc. (RIG - news) drilling under contract for Shell in the Gulf of Mexico in 1996.[snip]
