Yes that is what I hear also, but the box will be expensive, and I don't intend to have something sitting on top of my TV.....just like with the old cable box I had before I got a dish, its just something else to break....

There are 16 different "standardized" formats for HDTV. This is the reason for the box. It will be able to convert any of the approved formats.

I cannot recall some of the box manufactures, but I believe the value added may be in the programmable logic chips employed, being bid by companies such as LSI logic.

A few weeks ago I posted an article I found in the USA Today newspaper which addressed some of these issues....if I recall the box will not be cheap, much more expensive than the cable conversion box. Will try and pull up that post for you....not extremely informative but might have had a company name...
