BLDPF & RD: Shell & Daimler to share Fuel Cell Research from interactive.wsj.com Shell, Daimler To Share Fuel Cell Vehicle Devt Research Dow Jones Newswires 8/17LONDON -- Shell International Oil Products BV, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Group (U.RSH), and DBB Fuel Cell Engines GmbH, a subsidiary of Daimler Benz (G.DAI), have agreed to share fuel cell research with the aim of developing more efficient vehicles, according to a statement from Shell, Monday. Fuel cell powered vehicles perform comparably with traditional gasoline or diesel engined cars, but they reduce harmful fuel and noise emissions, said Shell. Cars powered by fuel cell technology running on pure hydrogen are highly energy efficient and emit water instead of producing pollutants such as nitrogen oxide or soot particles . "We have been working since 1992 on making this technology widely available which will ensure sustainable mobility into the next century. Our strategic alliance with Ballard Power Systems Inc., and Ford Motor Company will pave the way to make fuel cell powered cars available in 2004," said Ferdinand Panik, head of the fuel cell project group at Daimler Benz, DBB's main shareholder. DBB, whose other main shareholders are Ballard Power Systems Inc., (BLDPF) of Canada and Ford Motor Company (F), has been developing power systems for vehicles which convert hydrogen gas to electric power. Shell believes it can make a major contribution through the use of its proprietary Catalyic Partial Oxidation technology which has already been shown to be able to convert liquid fuels into a hydrogen rich gas. The result could be a car which has the environmental advantages of fuel cell power plus the convenience of filling up at an existing gasoline station.
