<<That kind of investigative technique is very heavy-handed and possibly illegal. >>

Assuming your description is accurate, I agree that it is heavy handed. However, it is most likely not illegal. Unless the person is being charged with a crime, it is not necessary to allow them to have an attorney present, nor is it necessary to give them a break, etc. Any evidence gathered during such an interrogation would not be allowed as evidence if you were to later bring charges against that person, but the interrogation would be legal. This kind of thing happens all the time with police investigating crimes. You can be held for something like 48 hours with no charges being brought. Unless they actually charge you, it seems you have very little recourse, other than to sue the police or the OIC for wrongful arrest or some such.

Sans the inflamatory editorializing:

Starr had Tripp, who had been asked by Lewinsky to lie to the grand jury about her relationship with the Pres, wired to talk with Lewinsky at the Ritz Carlton in Virginia on a Saturday. Starr insisted on that date, because the President was going the next day into a deposition in the Jones case and he wanted to make sure that what was taped was not influenced by the testimony the president would be giving the next day. Tripp and Lewinsky spoke and Tripp taped it. Upon determining the extent of the illegalities Lewinsky spoke of Starr's investigators told Lewinsky she had been taped and asked her to agree to being questioned. With her agreement, she went to the hotel room where for the next 6-10 hours she spilled her guts. Eventually tiring, she said she would like to ge to her mother and she did. She was escorted by the OIC, to prevent her from speaking to the POTUS and to tell him that he shouldn't follow through on his plan to lie to the grand jury. Being unable to alert the president, he proceeded to follow through on his plan to lie to the grand jury, thus illustrating his complete lack of integrity and his incredibly poor judgement.
