which got me searching for DirectShow drivers for hardware decoders.

This asia.microsoft.com says:

"Q. Where do I get DirectShow(tm) decoder drivers?

A. Microsoft Windows(r) 98 includes drivers for hardware decoders from Toshiba (Toshiba Infinia), Quadrant International (Dell XPS), and LuxSonor (Creative PC-DVD; not Dxr2 or earlier)..."


Interesting. I didn't realize that detail was posted on the net back in April. It was kept pretty quiet.
