Market notes: At the present writing, the S&P 500 stands at $1000
odd. Accepting the well-worn earnings estimates of between $47
and $50, the S&P 500 yet trades at between 20 and 21 times
earnings, still high by given historical standards. If memory serves,
Brinker has noted that, during the depths of the icy 1974 - 1975
bear market, that price to earnings ratio bottomed at about seven.
