Alex, thanks so much for weighing in with your scientist career track information. The day after I posted my request for help, my daughter changed high schools, and now she is making dream catchers, speaking very introductory Spanish, and generally hanging out in a tiny, liberal high school where the teachers wear Birkenstocks and do not necessarily shave their legs, instead of starting school at 7:30 am and studying until after ten every night. Learning lab, based on developmental neuropsychology, has replaced the stark lock-up approach to college preparatory studies, and the children are happy and giggly, instead of glum.

I am still really struck by your post, however. Well, I mean impressed! I knew you were very smart, and a worthy adversary on the issues we debate, but I did not quite realize how many years of higher education you have under your belt. Now I am afraid I will be shy arguing against you or something!! Well, I guess we will see about that, but I must say I envy you, because, as you said " . . . when I cracked my first organic chemistry text. It positively sang in my hand. I was hooked." I never found anything that excited me like that, and basically believe that people who have really found something that excites them passionately that can also support them financially are very, very lucky.

Thanks a lot!
