Queensland to embrace digital television opportunities

[ Back to the News | Back HOME ]
M2 PRESSWIRE via NewsEdge Corporation :
Digital broadcasting offers the prospect of
more State-based television programming for
Queensland and the other states, the ABC
Managing Director, Brian Johns said today at
an ABC Board function in Brisbane.

"Like other broadcasters, the ABC will offer
programs in High Definition Television
(HDTV), with cinema-plus quality pictures
and CD-quality sound" , he said.

"But at those times of the day when
programs are not provided in HDTV, the ABC
intends to use the flexibility of digital
spectrum to offer more than one channel",
Mr Johns said.

"This flexibility will make it much easier for
States like Queensland to break out of the
national network to schedule programs of
local relevance" , he said.

Of course the ABC's flexible use of this
spectrum is subject to Government review to
determine the basis on which the ABC will be
permitted to provide multi channel services,
Mr Johns said.

It is also subject to the Government
providing adequate funding to meet the
capital costs involved, he said.

"The ABC is better placed than any other
Australian broadcaster to deliver more local
and State-based programming because of its
extensive presence throughout metropolitan
and regional Australia."

"That is why we are so excited by the
prospect of digital broadcasting - and so
committed to taking advantage of the
flexibility of the digital pipeline ", Mr Johns
said.

"Everywhere I go in Australia - the ABC's
digital strategy has been welcomed; and I
know the support in Queensland has been
especially strong. "
