COMS had little synergy with USRX (hindsight now). Both are known as commodity makers. COMS could survive without USRX and vise versa.

TLAB's sonet will be a commodity soon and WDM makes it commoditized even sooner. So TLAB is basically buying its future competitor. TLAB and CIEN need each other to grow.

The biggest difference is TLAB/CIEN are not in the consumer market like COMS/USRX.
