Well, let's see. WDC and Maxtor were the weakest sisters. WDC's equity was dropping like a brick, and cash looked thin. But they managed to pull off their convert deal, making a purchase prohibitively expensive. Besides, WDC has nothing of value in the way of technology. Just lots of capacity that no one needs. Maxtor looked worse, with their overhang of debt, but then Hyundai pulled in some, and somehow floated the rest. Sheesh, they even got the greenshoe in there.

Ah yes, the HD industry mantra: "Too stupid to die."
