My 2c is that DJ will open up 150 -200 tomorrow and then give it all back by Wed to then set new low below 7500. After that, a rally towards 8000 then another hard crack down to low 7000's. From that point, a vigorous rally recouping 50% of the loss to date---then a second megadrop into the low 6's.

Jacob Snyder issues a strong buy on AMAT:

This smells like capitulation, in the market and the techs. I continue to be surprised by AMAT's strength. Yes, it's down, but it isn't any weaker than INTC or MSFT or CSCO. And it seems to want to keep it's head above 26. We're at P/S=2, which meets my value criteria. Everyone expects near-zero profits for the rest of the year, an upturn in 1999 at the earliest, and possibly not till 2000. This has been discussed widely, in this and numerous other forums. What else can go wrong? What new bad news can come out? How much worse can the picture be?

Anyway, I covered all my shorts, sold all my puts, and bought 100 contracts of ZPJAH (1/2001 AMAT 40 calls) today @ 6.375

Hitachi (6501) To Withdraw From US
Microchip Production
TOKYO (Nikkei)-Hitachi Ltd. moved on Tuesday to adopt a sweeping
restructuring plan centered around withdrawing from U.S.
semiconductor production and spinning off of its domestic
home-electronics plants into separate firms, company sources said.

Hitachi plans to halt the manufacturing of 4-megabit dynamic
random-access memory chips and microcontrollers at its U.S.
subsidiary, Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc., in late September,
dismissing all 500 production workers.

Hitachi intends to merge Hitachi Semiconductor, headquartered in
Irving, Texas, with Hitachi Micro Systems Inc. on Oct. 1, laying off an
additional 150 employees from Hitachi Semiconductor's sales division.
California-based Hitachi Micro designs microcontrollers and other
electronic devices.

Hampered by the worsening semiconductor market and aging
facilitates, Hitachi Semiconductor has seen earnings fall sharply. With
utilization rates low, the company has been in the red for some time.

Hitachi has apparently judged that the earnings environment for the
Texas firm will not improve any time soon.

After quitting the chip-production business in the U.S., Hitachi will
focus its operations there on developing and selling systems-on-a-chip
and other microchip devices.

Besides the U.S., Hitachi currently has production bases in Japan,
Singapore and Germany.

In another key streamlining move, Hitachi will spin off its three
home-electronics plants within a year, including its
videocassette-recorder plant in Ibaraki Prefecture. Hitachi will,
however, retain planning and development for consumer electronics in
its headquarters.

The planned divestiture is expected to reduce headquarters staff in
the home-electronics division from 1,500 to 1,000.

Katherine, I had assumed you were both smart and rich, after your fortunetelling the market I was ready to give you goddess status. Now you tell me you are a mere mortal, so do you think my 500 share purchase this morning started the market up. I am very impressed that the markets didn't fall back at the close, hopefully that is a sign of short term upward momentum. All my investment money designated for the long term is invested, I still have about 7K to play with trading daily. If we see another 500 point drop in the next 2 weeks I will play it all for the short rebound. I would hate to not have anything left and another big drop happens, this seems very likely with the large turn over we are seeing. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
