Clinton says U.S. economic policy sound
MOSCOW, Sept 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Bill Clinton said on Tuesday that, despite the slide in U.S. and other stock markets on Monday, his fundamental economic policy was sound and the United States would maintain its budgetary discipline.

''We believe our fundamental economic policy is sound. We believe our people are working at record rates and we are determined to stay on a path of fiscal discipline that brought us to where we are,'' he said in a speech to a college audience during a summit visit to Moscow.

''Wherever there are markets there will always be changes in those markets but we must attempt to move in the right direction,'' Clinton said.

The U.S. president, speaking after a first round of talks with Russian President Boris Yeltsin, said there were no painless solutions for Russia as it seeks to pull itself out of a financial crisis.
